About: Girls Empowerment Network (GENET-Malawi) is a young women’s rights organization. It is a movement of grassroot girls and young women that works to support gender equality, justice, girls leadership, empowerment and development. We work through forming and strengthening young women networks so that they are able to demand for their rights from duty bearers. Our vision is to create a world where empowered girls and young women are able to live in a human, just and equitable society. Our mission is to promote girls and young women empowerment, girls’ leadership and development and to advocate for the rights of the marginalized girls and women in Malawi to influence positive social transformation. GENET works in the following human development areas: health, education, gender, human rights, nutrition, harmful cultural practices and food security. Our current priority areas include partnership development and networking, institutional capacity building, research and young women inclusion and participation.
Position Overview: The primary focus of this role will be resource mobilization; however fellows will also be participating in a wide range of general programmatic and strategic responsibilities. The fellow will be part of management team in our small staff team; he/she will take part in general program design and planning and implementation.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the Executive Director, the Project Officer shall:
- Assist in work and program planning, and coordinating field activities
- Participate in program planning, design, implementation and monitoring and evaluation
- Assist in collection and analysis of field data for monitoring and evaluation purposes
- Assist with documentation of the best practices including writing and editing articles, press releases and other materials
- Implement of innovative fund raising and identification of new opportunities
- Initiate and establish relationships with donors at the country and international level and lead in programmes that will facilitate this
- Research and analyze donor call for funding applications including expressions of interest and requests for proposals
- Facilitate proposal development with program team members
- Prepare reports to donors and customized reports for different audiences
Required Skills and Experience:
- Background and interest in gender, human rights and youth development issues
- Fluency in English (both spoken and written)
- Ability to multi-task
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Research skills
- Sound knowledge of external relations, policy analysis and relationship development involving donors and external partners
- A strong awareness of current issues in the field of development, and donor funding opportunities
- Proven computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft software including MS Word processing, Powerpoint presentation, Excel spreadsheets, MS Publisher, Facebook and email and web based research
- Knowledge of various donor requirements and proven ability to develop and write winning grants proposals
- Program planning, design development and management
- Team builder and player
Living Conditions: Fellows will be provided with housing, health insurance and a living stipend of $650/month. Fellows will also receive an award of $1500 upon successful completion of the fellowship year. Flights to and from the placement site and all other costs associated with GHC programming are included.
