About: MASS is a nonprofit design firm that leverages the design and building process for social change, improvements in health, and the creation of dignity. To do this, MASS partners with organizations that require these services and are committed to improving people’s lives. In Rwanda, MASS is focused on continuing to research, implement and advocate for innovative design strategies that heal communities, as well as building out the Rwandan operations in order to have a broader reach and greater impact within the East African region.
MASS is currently involved with policy work at the Ministry of Health, studio and intern mentorships at the nearby Kigali Institute of Science and Technology’s Architecture Department, the design and construction of several health care wards and facilities for partners such as Partners In Health, UNICEF and MASS General Hospital in Rwanda and Uganda.
Position Overview: MASS’s design fellowship offers a rare opportunity to young architects and designers who wish to explore their field through the lens of global health and economic development. The design fellow will have the chance to be on a variety of challenging projects during the course of the fellowship year where s/he will work alongside exciting partners that range from governmental ministries to international development agencies and small grassroots organizations. The design fellow will work closely with experienced project managers and be involved in all phases including early stage research, schematic design, and construction administration. The fellow will learn to think critically and apply new methods throughout the design and building process.
Responsibilities: The Design Fellow will work directly under project managers and associates to help MASS meet the demanding deliverables of their fast-paced but rewarding work. Typical tasks include completing schematic presentations and construction documents, submitting proposals, assisting project managers on construction sites, and sharing the administrative load of running an International NGO in East Africa. As this line of work can be extremely demanding, MASS is looking for candidates with great attitudes. They should have an interest in the intersection of global health and design and be committed to working hard for the realization of MASS’s mission. The fellow should be willing to travel routinely to MASS project sites.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Degree in Architecture or design required
- Graphic design skills and portfolio
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Masters in Architecture
- Experience with design and drafting software including but not limited to: Rhino, Autocad, SketchUp, and AdobeSuite
- Interest in global health
- Prior experience working for an NGO or startup company
Living Conditions: Fellows will be provided with housing, health insurance and a living stipend of $650/month. Fellows will also receive an award of $1500 upon successful completion of the fellowship year. Flights to and from the placement site and all other costs associated with GHC programming are included. Fellows will live in a separate living quarters at the MASS Office, located near downtown Kigali.
