About: Action Africa Help International (AAH-I) is a non-governmental organization that implements health and development projects in Africa. It previously operated as Aktion Afrika Hilfe, e.V, a non-profit charitable organization first registered in Germany in 1990 that started working in Southern Sudan in that year; and subsequently registered in Kenya, Uganda and Zambia. The vision of AAH Uganda is sustainable and improved quality of life for livelihood challenged communities in Uganda. Its mission is to support livelihood challenged communities to sustainably improve their standard of living through community empowerment approaches in partnership with stakeholders. AAH has operated in Uganda since 1993. AAH Uganda has developed a strategic plan (2010-2014) that will see the consolidation of its activities in the current areas of program operations in Moyo, Adjumani, Hoima, Kiryandongo and Kamwenge districts; as well as up-scaling of its services in these districts to become more inclusive to target not only refugee settlements, but also national host communities. Key areas of focus include: Empowerment of both refugees from within the Great Lakes region and host Ugandan communities on Primary Health Care, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, HIV & AIDS, Education, Vocational training, Livelihood Security, Rights Education, Environmental conservation, and supporting people with special needs.
Position Overview: Global Health Corps fellows will work closely with and under the supervision of AAH Uganda’s Health Coordinator in improving existing Primary Health Care (PHC) Service delivery systems as well as support capacity-building efforts for health workers in Kyangwali Refugee Settlement. The overarching scope of AAH Uganda’s Primary Health Care program is to deliver comprehensive PHC based services to selected livelihood insecure communities by the year 2014.
Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the documentation of best practices for prevention of HIV & AIDS among the population and support for people affected by HIV & AIDS
- Data collection and data verification related to health sector indicators
- Provision of feedback on data to each supported site and assistance to site-level staff on how to utilize data for local program planning and quality improvement
- Documentation of best practices and lessons learned
- Participation in proposal development and report writing
- Encourage and promote mutual partnerships, networks and alliances
- Participate in developing a resource mobilization strategy
- Capacity-building for the existing cadre of health workers
- Promotion of life skills and substance abuse prevention among youth
- Encourage and promote mutual partnership, networks and alliances
- Participate in developing resource mobilization strategies
Required Skills and Experience:
- Analytical & decision making skills
- Ability to work under pressure
- Willingness to travel extensively in-country and work in rural settings
- Fluency in spoken and written English
- Ability to work in a team environment, but with self-sufficiency and self-motivation
- Strong interpersonal skills coupled with excellent communication skills: verbal, written, listening, presentation and facilitation
- Ability to multi-task: flexible and capable of working under pressure and tight deadlines with demonstrated ability to prioritize across multiple projects and relationships
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Qualifications in a Medicine/Primary Health Care/Clinical practice disciplines at Diploma and Degree levels highly desired
- Experience in provision of curative services, maternal & child health services and health education
- Participation/contribution towards managing health facilities in resource-constrained environments
- Creativity and innovative thinking, with demonstrated analytical skills and attention to detail
- Proficiency using statistical software and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)
- Experience in proposal development and in writing technical reports
- Experience developing and leading training programs, particularly related to delivery of quality Service programs
- Strong interest in global public health and prior exposure to global public health and/or development issues in Africa or other resource-limited settings
Living Conditions: Fellows will be provided with housing located in Kyangwali Settlement, Uganda, health insurance and a living stipend of $550/month. Fellows will also receive an award of $1500 upon successful completion of the fellowship year. Flights to and from the placement site and all other costs associated with GHC programming are included.
