About: Management Sciences for Health (MSH) is an international non-profit, public health organization with headquarters in the U.S., whose purpose is to strengthen health programs worldwide. MSH Uganda is currently running a number of USAID and other donor funded projects including SURE, both in Kampala and other parts of the country.

SURE (Securing Ugandans’ Right to Essential Medicines) will ensure that the population of Uganda has access to adequate quantities of good quality essential medicines and health supplies (EMHS) by strengthening the national essential medicines and health commodities supply system.

 

Position Overview: The fellow will work with the district computerization team in the achievement of the unit’s two major objectives:

  • Data collection from Health Facilities using a PDF-based electronic form to submit data which are aggregated after analysis into 2 main report types namely the District Report (45) and the National Report (1)
  • Computerize the Main Store at 15 hospitals by facilitating training of Health Facility staffs and support them in use of the system

 

Responsibilities:

  • Produce a clean database for import into a new SQL system under development
  • Perform support and maintenance visits to computerized hospitals in various districts of Uganda
  • Maintain the core database used in the hospital system
  • Support our Medicine Management Supervisors in computer use

 

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Advanced Excel skills required; that is advanced formula using lists, Pivot tables for analysis, basic macros and cross sheet references
  • Basic or better knowledge of SQL required (scripts and queries)
  • Good hardware as well software knowledge with experience in user support
  • Good documentation skills (development of written procedures like SOPs)
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Proficiency using statistical software and MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), data  collection, validation and analysis
  • Strong interest in global public health
  • Ability to work in a team environment, but with self-sufficiency and self-motivation
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Strong interpersonal skills coupled with excellent communication skills: verbal, written, listening, presentation and facilitation
  • Fluency in spoken and written English
  • Ability to multi-task: flexible and capable of working under pressure and tight deadlines with demonstrated ability to prioritize across multiple projects and relationships

 

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • IT related experience, preferably within health, i.e., Master in Health Informatics
  • Data collection workflows
  • Aggregation of data
  • Database management and maintenance
  • IT Training and coordination experience
  • System support and working with remote desktop and/or Skype
  • SQL server database manipulation

 

Living Conditions: Fellows will be provided with housing, health insurance and a living stipend of $550/month. Fellows will also receive an award of $1500 upon successful completion of the fellowship year.  Flights to and from the placement site and all other costs associated with GHC programming are included.
