About: Afya Mzuri’s ambition is to be recognized as Zambia’s leading expert in behaviour change, community empowerment and knowledge management for health.  Our mission is “to contribute to the national health response through empowering people and communities to adopt healthy behaviours through innovative and participatory approaches.”  We are currently local implementing partners on four USAID-funded programmes:  Communications Support for Health (CSH), Corridors of Hope (CoH III), Local Capacity Building Programme (LPCB) and Zambian-Led Prevention Initiative (ZPI).  We also continue to strengthen our partnership with GIZ who are currently supporting the expansion of our Health & Wellness Workplace Programmes.

Our five draft strategic objectives for 2013-2016 are as follows:

  • To enhance our expertise and level of service provision in KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT
  • To build strong brand recognition and VISIBILITY for Afya Mzuri
  • To maintain and enhance our reputation as a leading HIV PREVENTION service provider
  • To create a HIGH PERFORMING organisational culture that is able to attract and retain top talent

Two further ‘cross-cutting’ imperatives for the organization are:

  • To ensure the organisation’s long-term SUSTAINABILITY and financial viability beyond current programmes
  • To ensure GENDER issues are mainstreamed into all our programmes and organisational activities

Position Overview: The Knowledge Management & Communications Specialist will work directly with the Senior Management Team, Knowledge Management Team and Program Teams, reporting directly to either a Director of Program or the Executive Director.  The fellow will be responsible for the development and implementation of the organization’s Knowledge Management and Communications Strategy.

Responsibilities:  This position holder will be responsible for making a significant contribution to three of the organisation’s key strategic objectives and one of its priority cross-cutting issues:

Primary Goals

  • To enhance our expertise and level of service provision in KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT
  • To build strong brand recognition and VISIBILITY for Afya Mzuri
  • To create a HIGH PERFORMING organisational culture that is able to attract and retain top talent
  • To ensure the organisation’s long-term SUSTAINABILITY and financial viability beyond current programmes

Key Deliverables

  • Develop a comprehensive organizational Knowledge Management strategy and roll-out plan for implementation
  • Oversee the  implementation of the organization’s Public Relations Strategy
  • Develop and facilitate the organization’s public policy engagement and advocacy strategy
  • Develop and implement an internal communications strategy, including staff engagement in the new strategic plan and the development of a regular newsletter
  • Oversee initial phase implementation of the long-term business plan for the Dziwani Knowledge Centre for Health
  • Provide lead guidance and support for key KM Team initiatives such as the development of IEC materials, the development of website content, the coordination of on-line web portal forum and the development and delivery of e-learning curricular
  • Build staff capacity in documentation – across the organization
  • Lead an internal improvement ‘filing’ project – both hard and electronic
  • Make a significant contribution towards the organization’s business development and resource mobilization efforts

Expectations

  • Act as a counterpart to our Dziwani Resource Centre Manager, building his/her capacity as a KM expert
  • Work closely with the Knowledge Management Team – building a team of KM experts
  • Build organizational capacity in KM & Communications – at senior, middle & site levels
  • Work closely with our Behaviour Change & Communications team – building capacity in both internal and external communications

 

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline
  • Significant experience working across a diverse range of functions at middle-senior level in the private, public and/or nonprofit sectors
  • 2 years+ experience working in either a Knowledge Management and/or Communications-related role
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with a proven track record in reporting, documentation and public presentations
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a  proven track record of working with people at all levels – from senior executives to community beneficiaries
  • Strong computer literacy – particularly MS Office suite

 

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • A Master’s degree or relevant postgraduate qualification
  • A passion for writing, editing and documentation
  • Experience working for a non-profit organization and/or in the corporate sector
  • Experience working with large-scale donor funded programs in the health sector – specifically with USAID
  • Experience managing website content and electronic databases
  • Proven track record of capacity building – at individual, community and organizational levels
  • Experience in business development and/or resource mobilization e.g. contributing towards proposal writing, generating and tracking new opportunities

 

Living Conditions: Fellows will be provided with housing, health insurance and a living stipend of $650/month. Fellows will also receive an award of $1500 upon successful completion of the fellowship year.  Flights to and from the placement site and all other costs associated with GHC programming are included.
