About: CHAMP is a vibrant and innovative Zambian organization involved in providing health policy solutions and project implementation in various workplaces and communities. CHAMP has a comparative edge in the area of private sector engagement in implementing HIV workplace and community programs. With headquarters in Lusaka, CHAMP has field offices in selected districts of Zambia.

CHAMP has run a call center for the past 10 years. The main objective is to support, expand, and maintain the 990 Talkline as a health and social services information, counseling, and referral resource for all of Zambia. The service is available to the public through a telephone short code 990 which has in the last 2 years been used as an emergency line.

During the past 12 months the service has been extended to online access through the CHAMP web portal. The portal provides more platforms such as a discussion forum and soon to be introduced online chat. The service is envisaged to integrate SMS technology.

Position Overview: The Call Center Software Engineer will work together with the Learning Center Manager and Web and Apps Administrator to help rollout successful and sustainable web portal 990 operations furthering the achievement of CHAMP’s goals.



  • Review data management and put in place efficient databases
  • Analysis and object oriented design
  • Perform an end to end software development life cycle projects and activities identifying new opportunities
  • Translate technical development and specification for testing development of bugging/ debugging, User Acceptance Test, documentation, system administration to an overall new functionality integration.
  • Integrate of new platforms providing more access to the  call center including chat services, SMS technology
  • Test the software and assuring its quality
  • Performance tuning, balancing, improvement, automation and usability
  • General call center performance tuning


Required Skills and Experience:

  • Language ability: English
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Applications or related subject
  • The candidate must be a certified developer or should possess an equivalent experience in the industry
  • Should have ample experience in working with the major computer languages like JAVA, Windows.NET/C# or PHP
  • Must be highly proficient in computer hardware and software knowledge
  • Should have excellent team working skills
  • Should have enough knowledge of dealing with clients and meeting their IT requirements
  • Strong knowledge of various software programming and ability of learning new things including programming for mobile devices


Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Strong knowledge of various software programming and ability of learning new things including programming for mobile devices
  • Experience in supporting a call center

Living Conditions:  Fellows will be provided with housing, health insurance and a living stipend of $650/month. Fellows will also receive an award of $1500 upon successful completion of the fellowship year.  Flights to and from the placement site and all other costs associated with GHC programming are included.
