The Business Development Officer will be supervised by the Amref Regional Business Development Manager and will support the implementation of Amref Malawi’s resource mobilization plan. The Business Development Officer will be primarily responsible for supporting Amref Health Africa in Malawi in its fundraising efforts. This will involve writing grant proposals and raising the organization’s profile to prospective donors through meetings and other fora. The fellow will also collaborate with both programs and finance teams as required.
- Contribute to the development of the resource mobilization strategy with support from finance and program staff
- Identify and cultivate prospective donors, and support implementation of the fundraising strategy
- Organize and execute special events with corporate and institutional donors
- Support the regional business development manager in responding to calls for proposals, in collaboration with the relevant program portfolio managers and other staff
- Collaborate with the communications team to market the organization to potential partners
- Support district staff in the development of district level proposals
Skills and Experience
- At least one year of professional experience in fundraising or sales, preferably from a diverse range of sources such as grants, individual donors, fundraising events, or contracted services from partner organizations*
- Strong written communication and editing skills with the ability to write clear, articulate, and persuasive proposals, as evidenced by past writing products like reports, blogs, articles, or summaries, and ideally, successful past proposals*
- Experience with prospect research and/or fundraising information sources like Guidestar or the Foundation Center*
- Experience developing and/or improving internal policies, procedures, manuals, or guidelines
- Demonstrated project management ability to ensure internal and external collaborators achieve a time-bound goal or project
- Experience with event planning involving logistics such as transportation, food, materials, speakers, etc.
- Experience with public speaking, as evidenced by presentations, trainings, workshops, etc.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a good contributor in teamwork environments
- Computer skills in Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook
- Strong strategic thinking ability in communications and public relations environment
- Flexible and capable of working under pressure and tight deadlines, with demonstrated ability to prioritize across multiple projects and relationships
- Creative and innovative thinker, with demonstrated analytical skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work in a collaborative environment, but with self-sufficiency and self-motivation
- Past success monitoring and meeting specific sales or fundraising goals
About the Organization
Amref Health Africa in Malawi was established in 2012. The Malawi office is part of the bigger Amref Health Africa International which was established in 1957 as the Flying Doctors with its headquarters (HQ) in Nairobi, Kenya. Amref’s initial work in Malawi included working with and treating women of reproductive age with vesico-vaginal fistulae, and other projects on eradication of child marriages and trachoma. Currently, Amref Health Africa in Malawi is implementing a number of projects in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH); sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR); reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH); and advocacy in over eight districts.
