Based in Kampala, Uganda, Maureen Amutuhaire is a Senior Medical Officer and iCCM Lead at the Ministry of Health–Uganda. With over a decade of experience, she partners closely with village health teams to strengthen disease prevention, community health promotion, and the management of childhood illnesses such as malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhea in hard-to-reach areas. Her work ensures timely referrals and continuity of essential services, even during public health emergencies like COVID-19 and Ebola.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Maureen led efforts to advocate for and secure personal protective equipment for community health workers—ensuring their safety and sustaining care for vulnerable populations. Under her leadership, community data reporting rates rose from 17% to over 85%, demonstrating her commitment to data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement.
In her current role, she supports Uganda’s COVID-19 Response and Emergency Preparedness Plan (UCREPP), which has strengthened emergency services, infection prevention, blood availability, and care for vulnerable populations nationwide.
Maureen’s leadership is rooted in a belief that “no one should be left behind.” She is committed to advancing equitable access to quality healthcare and addressing the social determinants that perpetuate health inequities. She draws inspiration from John C. Maxwell’s words: “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”
