Position Overview

The Partners in Health/Inshuti Mu Buzima (PIH/IMB) GHC Research Officer will be based in Rwinkwavu and focus on supporting the research department strategic goals of developing rigorous implementation research to support health care delivery. He/she will support improvement of: data quality, research capacity building and administration, dissemination of findings, and grant writing and follow-up. The Research Officer will report to the Director of Research and work closely with research managers in specific clinical programs such as oncology, neonatology, infectious diseases, and mental health where on-going research activities are being implemented. The position will be based in Rwinkwavu, Kayonza, but with possible short-term assignments in Kirehe and Burera Districts.

In 2005, PIH was invited by the Rwanda Government to start working in Rwanda, and the local sister organization IMB was initiated. Today, PIH/IMB accompanies the Ministry of Health (MOH) in three rural districts (Kayonza, Kirehe, and Burera), with a total catchment area of 900,000 people, to deliver high quality healthcare at three district hospitals and 40 health centers, and at the community level through roughly 2,700 community health workers. PIH/IMB partners with the Government of Rwanda (GOR) to deliver dramatic gains in population health, equity, and prosperity in previously underserved rural communities.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a Research Officer and assist in designing, implementing, and evaluating research projects
  • Support development and rollout of study tools
  • Participate in writing grant proposals, performing literature reviews, data collection and analysis, and manuscript writing 
  • Support data quality improvement procedures and practices
  • Support development of electronic data collection tools and participate in archiving/managing these data on PIH servers
  • Help coordinate capacity building efforts, such as research and biostatical trainings, and other training programs such as the intermediate Operational Research Training Program

Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree*
    • Preferred: Bachelor's or master’s degree in biostatistics, public health, epidemiology or related field
  • Strong quantitative research training and field experience* 
  • Experience working on research studies and/or with data analysis*
  • Strong interpersonal skills and excellent communication skills, including verbal, written, presentation, and facilitation*
  • Experience writing grants and manuscripts*
  • At least one year experience working with public health data in a monitoring and evaluation or research position
  • Experience working with Microsoft Access or other data analysis software such as STATA or R-statistics
  • Work experience with research studies beyond data collection (such as study coordination, instrument development, or analysis)
  • Ability to multi-task while maintaining organized records and files
  • Strong interest in global health and willingness to live in rural setting
