Claire Espey grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Health & Society with a Public Health concentration. After graduating, Claire moved to Brooklyn and worked briefly as a paralegal focused on Medicaid fraud class action litigation before transitioning to academia. As a project coordinator for the department of Epidemiology, Claire has been working at Columbia University in interdisciplinary population health research and administration for the past five years. During this time, Claire also received her MPH degree in Health Promotion from Columbia. Her practicum experience with Management Sciences for Health in Port-au-Prince informed her master’s thesis, a multi-level intervention designed to increase hand washing with soap in Haiti. Since completing her studies, Claire began collaborating with the Millennium Villages Project on program planning and advocacy around water, sanitation and hygiene issues. Through these activities she has been able to focus her interests in promoting greater global health equity.
