Communities come in many shapes and sizes, but regardless of their formation, their power to bring change is always greater than any individual can hope to achieve.

John Spangler grew up on an organic vegetable farm in West Virginia. Since 2011, he has worked in the Office of Global Affairs at the United States Department of Health and Human Services. Here, John founded ONE HHS, an LGBT employee resource group, and supported global health policy portfolios including human rights and LGBT health. He completed his bachelor’s degree at George Washington University where he studied international affairs and co-founded the Food Justice Alliance and GroW Community Garden. During this time, John interned with the Rural Development program at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and also studied abroad in southern India. After graduation, he returned to India to continue his Tamil language studies. Prior to joining GHC, he served on the United States delegation to the 68th World Health Assembly. John volunteers with nutrition support programs and tests recipes for his cookbooks.
