Julie Bernstein just completed a decade of leadership at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation where she served as Deputy Director for Global Policy and Advocacy. She led her team to design and implement advocacy and communications strategies to support the delivery of vaccines in low-income countries. Julie has a proven track record leading advocacy and communications at nonprofits and foundations that focus on social justice and women’s and children’s health. Julie has coached, mentored, and championed scores of colleagues and young professionals, helping them live their values, unlock their potential, and realize their authentic and powerful selves.
Prior to joining the foundation, Julie was Director of Policy Communications at CARE, where she led CARE’s communications efforts across several priority issues including maternal health and ending child marriage. Before CARE, Julie was Director of Global Programs and Senior Media Advisor at Susan G. Komen for the Cure where she was instrumental in expanding Komen’s global presence through educational programs and communications campaigns. Julie also served as Communications Director at Alliance for Justice, a national association of more than 100 organizations dedicated to advancing justice and democracy.
Julie serves on the Board of Directors for Global Health Corps, an organization training and mobilizing a diverse community of global health leaders to advance health equity. She served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Papua New Guinea. Julie holds a BA in Journalism from University of Wisconsin-Madison. She lives in Seattle with her husband and twin sons.
