Julie Bernstein is the Deputy Director for Program Advocacy and Communications within Global Policy and Advocacy at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. She leads a team responsible for Primary Health Care and Immunization advocacy and communications. Julie has more than 20 years of experience leading strategic advocacy and communications at nonprofits and foundations that focus on social justice and women’s and children’s health.

Prior to joining the foundation, Julie was Director of Policy Communications at CARE, where she led CARE’s communications efforts across several priority issues including maternal health and ending child marriage. Before CARE, Julie was Director of Global Programs and Senior Media Advisor at Susan G. Komen for the Cure where she was instrumental in expanding Komen’s global presence through educational programs and communications campaigns. Julie also served as Communications Director at Alliance for Justice, a national association of more than 100 organizations dedicated to advancing justice and democracy.

Julie serves on the Board of Directors for Advocates for Youth, an advocacy organization fighting for sexual health, rights and justice. She served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Papua New Guinea. Julie holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from University of Wisconsin-Madison. She lives in Seattle with her husband and twin sons.
