Hailing from Mzuzu, Malawi, Atusaye Mwalwanda serves as a Project Officer at Luke International, where he works closely with communities in Mzimba North through WASH, health promotion, women’s empowerment, and education programs. By engaging directly with underserved households, he builds trust and ensures that interventions are responsive to the real needs of the communities he serves.
Atusaye’s dedication to public health extends beyond his current role. He led COVID-19 awareness campaigns that reached over 2,000 community members, equipping them with accurate information and preventive measures. Additionally, he contributed to the academic and health community by publishing a peer-reviewed research paper on cervical cancer screening among female health workers, providing insights that support early detection and improved health outcomes.
In his current position, Atusaye is particularly proud of coordinating WASH interventions, including the construction of primary school toilets, girls’ changing rooms, and rehabilitation of boreholes, which have improved access to clean water and sanitation for over 3,000 community members. These projects have reduced waterborne diseases and promoted better hygiene practices, while his direct engagement ensures that underserved communities have a voice in program implementation.
Committed to advancing health equity, Atusaye empowers communities, informs policymakers through research, and works to ensure equitable access to resources, knowledge, and opportunities for sustainable health improvements. His leadership is inspired by the words of Simon Sinek: “Leadership is not about being in charge. It is about taking care of those in your charge.”
