Role Overview

The Resource Mobilization Officer, in collaboration with the current team working on resource mobilization, will support the development of a long-term fundraising strategy and fundraising standard operating procedures for HDI. He/she/they will research resource mobilization best practices and support the implementation of the best practices that fit HDI. The Resource Mobilization Officer will also work towards ensuring these best practices are firmly established in HDI’s resource mobilization practices. He/she/they will hold opportunities for building HDI staff capacity to write grants. The overall goal should be supporting HDI to develop resource mobilization best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development of a long-term fundraising strategy and fundraising standard operating procedures for HDI
  • Establish and document best practices for resource mobilization
  • Work collaboratively with the project coordinators, M&E officers, research team, and program staff to identify fundraising opportunities and build capacity of staff to raise funds
  •  Identify areas of improvement in terms of resource mobilization and financial sustainability
  • Participate in the development of HDI strategic plan, ensuring that the best practices for resource mobilization are incorporated
  • Organize and choose monthly resource mobilization meetings

Skills and Experience

  • At least one year of experience raising funds and writing grants, ideally for nonprofits in the area of access to healthcare
  • Experience developing and implementing innovative strategies for resource mobilization
  • Experience implementing new sustainable approaches, ideally related to resource mobilization
  • Strong written communication skills, including writing presentations, one-pagers, and other documents to share with donors
  • Past experience participating in the grant writing process for successful grants, preferably grants submitted to international organizations/foundations and/or submitted by a nonprofit in the area of healthcare access
  • Strong oral communication skills evidenced by experience with public speaking (e.g. presentations, trainings, or workshops)
  • Experience documenting best practices
  • Experience building capacity of staff in resource mobilization
  • Creative problem-solving and ability to work independently under tight deadlines
  • Excellent self-motivation and ability to drive innovative solutions
  • Strong interpersonal skills with experience working in multicultural, values driven teams
  • Familiarity with online sources of fundraising and grant portals

About the Organization

Health Development Initiative (HDI) is a non-profit organization based in Kigali, Rwanda. HDI strives to improve both the quality and accessibility of healthcare for all Rwandans through advocacy, education, and training. HDI was founded in 2005 by a dedicated group of Rwandan physicians working in health facilities and communities across the country. This diverse group of health professionals was united by a shared commitment to improve the health of disadvantaged communities within and outside of the healthcare system.

 

Today, HDI brings together a team with vast experience in medicine, public health, and community development to bridge the gap between communities and the healthcare system. HDI believes that health outcomes can be improved through parallel development of the community and the medical profession’s capacity to support prevention, care, and treatment of disease and illness. HDI supports community and health systems strengthening and works to empower individuals with tools and knowledge to advance the health of their communities, so that all Rwandans may lead healthy lives, free from preventable disease and premature mortality.

The current thematic areas for HDI include:

  • Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), focusing on access to contraception and other SRHR services; HIV (and other sexually transmitted infections) prevention, testing and treatment; and, comprehensive sexuality education, particularly for adolescents, youth, and women
  • Human rights and the right to health, focusing on the rights of LGBTI persons, prisoners, drug users, sex workers, and refugees
  • community health and development, particularly child nutrition, water, sanitation, and hygiene
