Rooted in Providence, Rhode Island, Shailyn Castro serves as the Data & Evaluation Manager for the City of Providence. Growing up and continuing to live in the city has deepened Shailyn’s connection to the communities she serves. She finds it rewarding to contribute directly to the neighborhoods that shaped her and to represent their interests in programs, meetings, and decision-making spaces.
One of Shailyn’s proudest achievements is reestablishing the Dominican Students at Brown organization, creating a vital safe space for students from both Brown University and RISD. This experience was formative in Shailyn’s leadership journey.
Currently, Shailyn is energized by initiatives focused on addressing food insecurity in Providence. While it is a global challenge, she sees firsthand how targeted local efforts can make a meaningful difference. Shailyn’s dedication to health equity and social justice is a guiding principle in all aspects of her life. She is committed to building and sustaining systems that ensure everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
To Shailyn, leadership is best captured by the phrase, “Equity, not equality,” a reminder that fairness requires recognizing and addressing different needs to achieve true justice.
