Suzan Nakalawa coordinates antimicrobial stewardship projects across districts in Central Uganda, collaborating closely with health workers, community health workers, and local leaders. Her engagement supports capacity building, knowledge translation, and health system strengthening, ensuring interventions are responsive to the needs of frontline providers and the communities they serve.
Outside of her current role, Suzan was selected as a Millennium Fellow in 2020, where she co-led a mobile health initiative, AskTheDoctor, connecting underserved communities to doctors via phone consultations and training community members on safe health-seeking practices. She also completed an Environmental Health internship, conducting community health assessments and interventions that strengthened her foundation in preventive health and public health research.
In her current position, Suzan is proud of her work on antimicrobial stewardship initiatives, where she has engaged over 700 health facility staff and community health workers to promote responsible medicine use, generating evidence that informs national policy discussions. She is also excited by her contributions to malaria control research, coordinating field activities, engaging stakeholders, and translating findings into actionable interventions.
Suzan is committed to health equity by ensuring underserved communities, from frontline health workers to vulnerable populations, have access to knowledge, resources, and systems that promote healthier lives. She is inspired by Ken Blanchard’s quote, “Leadership is not something you do to people, it is something you do with people,” which guides her collaborative and inclusive approach to public health leadership.
