Community offers a sense of belonging to its members, an opportunity for one to grow, an environment to mentor and be mentored, a place where diversity is nurtured and celebrated, and a platform upon which we can make a noble contribution in the lives of other people.

Joan is from eastern Uganda. She completed her undergraduate studies in Sociology at Makerere University. As an undergraduate, she completed a research project on the impact of local women gift giving associations upon the welfare of women in peri-urban communities. Additionally, she volunteered with the Uganda Village Project, mobilizing communities to adopt safe water hygiene and seek fistulae repair services. She also volunteered with Butabika Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Unit. Joan completed her Masters’ degree in Population and Reproductive Health at Makerere University, during which she worked as a consultant with the Program for Accessible Communication and Education, and interned with the Ministry of Health (R H Division). Before joining GHC, she worked with the Uganda Health Marketing Group under their Monitoring and Evaluation Department. Joan founded a local community engagement youth group in East Kampala and hopes to continue engaging communities to discuss positive changes towards their welfare.
