Joviah Tuhaise was born in Fort Portal, Uganda. She was a member of the Al and Data Science research group of Makerere University that designed a mobile crop surveillance system for the National Crops Resources Research Institute (NaCRRI) Uganda, where she assisted the team in research and data formatting. Prior to GHC, she was a tutorial assistant at Uganda Technology & Management University where she specialized in taking students through the practical aspects of data mining, data analyses and machine learning. Joviah has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer science from Makerere University. Her master’s thesis focused on the automation of symptom measurement of cassava brown streak disease. As a result of this research, she proposed a new system to the NaCRRI to automatically assign scores to necrotized cassava tubers. Joviah has also spent time visiting rural primary school students in Western Uganda and supporting them with scholastic materials under the Tusome Project. She enjoys cooking, jogging and watching movies.
