Mariam Azam currently lives in New York. She holds a bachelor’s degree in human biology from Benedictine University. Before attending Columbia University where Mariam received a Master of Public Health, she worked as the administrator for a free health clinic on the south side of Chicago. While in graduate school, Mariam’s practicum focused on her work in South Africa with the Aurum Institute where she developed a recruitment system targeting women from local antenatal clinics for an HIV study. Mariam also evaluated an intervention aimed at improving the clinical treatment of sexual assault victims for the International Rescue Committee and volunteered as a Rape Crisis Advocate at Bellevue Hospital. After completing her master’s degree in 2011, she worked for New York City’s healthcare system improving primary care performance, with her most recent leadership position at Harlem Hospital.
