Thokozani Kachimera was born in Lilongwe, Malawi. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, media and writing from the University of Cape Town. While working as a manager in the hospitality industry, Thokozani founded Maid of Malawi, a training initiative that empowers economically disadvantaged women by teaching them employable domestic skills and Basic English. At the University of Cape Town she worked with the Educational Development Center on an interactive Radio Instruction Program which involved creating educational programs for radio in the hopes of reaching primary school students in classrooms across the country. Thokozani was a member of the Rural Women’s Assembly movement, which facilitates exchanges and creates linkages between South Africa and South America to strengthen rural women’s movements. In her spare time, Thokozani enjoys reading and outdoor activities.
