Dr. Blumenthal is the former Assistant Surgeon General of the United States, and she is currently the Senior Medical and Policy Advisor at amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, Distinguished Advisor for Health and Medicine at the Center for the Study of Presidency, and Clinical Professor at Georgetown Tufts University Schools of Medicine. She served as a leading US government health expert and spokesperson for over 20 years under the Administrations of four US presidents. She was previously the first Deputy Assistant Secretary for Women’s Health, a Senior Global and E-Health Advisor in the US Department of Health and Human Services, Chief of the Behavioral Medicine and Basic Prevention Research Branch, Head of the Suicide Research Unit at the National Institute of Mental Health, Chair of the NIH Health and Behavior Coordinating Committee, and a White House Medical Advisor.
Dr. Blumenthal is known for her significant leadership in eradicating inequities in women’s health as well as the study of sex differences in disease in the US and across the globe. She lives with her husband, US Senator Ed Markey.
