Role Overview
The Business Intelligence Specialist will support the analysis; planning and designing; implementing and monitoring of business intelligence infrastructure within Neno District and all other places where PIH Malawi has offices. We seek an experienced and versatile Business Intelligence Specialist, who is committed to social justice and health equity, to support our platforms. This includes local servers, cloud solutions, computers, tablets and smartphones for PIH and selected partners.
The Business Intelligence Specialist will report directly to the mHealth and Data Warehousing Specialist with administrative support from the Medical Informatics Manager. They will work closely with the mHealth and Data Warehousing Specialist in order to ensure that our Business Intelligence systems are maximizing value for our patients, staff and programmes.
Responsibilities
Data Visualization
- Build and edit content in visualization software, including PowerBI
- Work with the communications team to produce compelling content from available data for external sharing
- Develop visual content for implementation research for publication and conference presentation
- Lead data visualization best practices and standards across program and organization dashboards
- Troubleshoot issues
Data extraction
- Build new tools to facilitate data extraction using Python, SQL scripts or other tools
- Document data dictionaries for data systems
- Automate gathering and cleaning data from different sources, including surveys, interviews, and health records
Data Warehousing
- Build extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) processes for existing database systems at PIH to support development of visuals from large datasets (e.g. SQL and NoSQL databases)
- Support compilation of monthly, quarterly reports and data requests as assigned
Data analytics / transformations
- Run different analytics on data to establish trends or patterns; communicate to stakeholders
- Ensure system integrity in our analytics platforms such DHIS2
- Develop new content in our DHIS2 reporting platform including data sets, tracker applications and reports
- Work with program teams to assess digitization requirements and documentation of system and application proposals
- Develop scripts and automating processes for pushing data from routine reports to analytics or data warehouse platforms
- Work with geospatial data to run analytics using GIS packages including: QGIS, ArcGIS
- Customize reporting templates to suit different stakeholder needs
Capacity Building
- Support with trainings for the Ministry of Health, community and clinical programs teams to improve their utilization of dashboard and visualization platforms
- Support with building the capacity of the APZU informatics and health management information systems (HMIS) teams to leverage modern tools in the implementation of digital health platforms
- Develop documentation and training content including user manuals for business intelligence platforms
Skills and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, statistics or another relevant field*
- At least two years experience in IT network and systems administration*
- Experience in at least one of the following areas: Android application development, web development, including front-end development and user-experience; software configurations for servers; database management systems; or proficiency in a scripting language such as Python, R or Julia; data visualization (Power BI or Tableau)*
- Experience with mHealth technology such as CommCare, ODK, SurveyCTO
- Experience with Data visualization software, platforms or packages such as PowerBI, Tableau, Plot.ly, Matplotlib, ggplot2, Metabase, or Superset
- Relational database management experience
- Experience with Microsoft 360 suite of applications
- Experience with query languages including SQL and MapReduce
- Proficiency in at least one data analysis package such as R, SAS, Stata, SPSS
- Effective communication skills including speaking, writing and active listening.
- Ability to interact professionally and with sensitivity with diverse staff, clients, health workers and partners, including Ministry of Health staff
- Strong analytical, communication and problem-solving skills
- Comfortable living in a rural area with ability to take initiative and work with minimal direction
- Willingness to take on additional work outside of the job description as required by PIH

PIH began working in Malawi in 2007, where today we support the Ministry of Health (MOH) to serve a catchment area of around 160,000 people through 14 health centers and two hospitals in partnership with our sister organizations. Abwenzi Pa Za Umoyo (APZU) is in the Neno District.
