I was browsing through my pictures and reflecting on my past year here in Zambia when I came across some pictures from my first trip to Livingstone, the former capital of Zambia and home of the Mosi-o-Tunya, Tonga for “The Smoke that Thunders,” and commonly known as Victoria Falls.
When my friends asked me if I wanted to go white water rafting, my answer was an instant “Yes!” Little did I know that there would be Class V rapids and that I would be thrown from the raft three times. When I speak to people I meet heading to Livingstone I definitely recommend the white water rafting, telling them “it was the most fun I’ve ever had.” I had no idea what I was up for when I signed up, and there were moments of pure terror, but I’ve made a commitment to myself to return again in the near future.
The picture above shows me and some others being thrown from our raft at “The Oblivion” rapid. I’m the one holding onto my oar. This was our third flip. During the first two, I was able to keep my calm and grab people who were being swept away but this time, I was launched from the raft and surfaced over a 100m away. We had huge life jackets and expert kayakers prepared to rescue us. Don’t tell my mother, okay?
