Role Overview

The Fellow will contribute to the attainment of overall malaria SBC planning and implementation of malaria with emphasis on community advocacy, community engagement, social mobilization and support/initiate community-led interventions. The fellow will work under the Supervision of the Principal SBC Officer and liaise with other key programme staff to accomplish the key result areas which include coordination and planning, coordination, capacity building, development of messages and materials, use of mass and social media as well as strengthening the monitoring and evaluation component of SBC. Emphasis shall be on data-driven and evidenced based interventions as prioritized in the National Malaria Elimination Strategic Plan (2022-2026)

Responsibilities

Policies and guidelines 

  • Support the design and development process of the SBC Strategy and various guidelines i.e. How to Conduct A Community Dialogue, How to Conduct a Village Meeting, Malaria Talks in Schools, Using Drama or How to Use Public Address System for Effective Sensitization 

Implementation of SBC activities 

  • Support the implementation of SBC activities in accordance with principles, guidelines and standards
  • Assist in the implementation of SBC field activities and support documentation of best practices

Development of content for social media and Website management 

  • Creates content in collaboration with technical officers and distributes across social media platforms i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
  • Establishes brand authority (Malaria Ends with me, malaria ends with you)
  • Manages NMEC reputation i.e. rebut any negative publicity on the programme
  • Provides social customer care i.e. responds to issues raised, link between the social media platform and technical officers in providing answers
  • Skills in basic Social Media graphics and videography an added advantage
  • Updating NMEC website and uploading documents
  • Collation of questions on platforms and compilation of responses
  • Monitoring traffic on social media platforms to main the number of followers

Development and design of strategies, approaches, messages and materials    

  • Support development of approaches for health provider behavior change - health facility and Community Health Workers  

Validation and vetting of SBC activities    

  • Assists to review and inspect SBC materials designed and developed through the SBC TWG and ensuring clearance guidelines as provided by MoH
  • Support standardization process of tools/guidelines for use by implementers
  • Support improvement and vetting systems of SBC materials at all levels to ensure quality, consistency and appropriateness of materials

Monitoring, mentorship and support supervision    

  • Assist to develop various tool for reporting, supervision and monitoring
  • Support establishment of detailed Monitoring and Evaluation indicators for SBC 

Skills and Experience

  • At least one year of experience in conducting or participating in surveys, rapid assessments, and evaluations of health programmes*
  • Good writing skills and should be able to write, analyze and edit reports, articles for publication*
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, both written and verbal*
  • Sound knowledge and skills in Research and one-year experience in data analysis, data interpretation and use*
  • Experience in social media and website management, including content creation for social media platforms*
  • Experience in developing messages and SBC materials in accordance with the principles and procedures
  • At least one year of experience in conducting community engagement activities
  • Team player and able to work in a busy environment and ability to network/create partnerships

About the Organization

The National Malaria Elimination Program (NMEP) is organized along all the administrative levels of government, at National, Provincial, district and facility Levels in providing malaria preventive and curative services. The health facility catchment area is the operational units of the Malaria Elimination Program. 

Zambia has been implementing a multitude of interventions to fight malaria. Amongst the interventions, vector control is critical as the country transitions from burden reduction to elimination of malaria. In this regard, the country has adopted the integrated vector management (IVM) strategy as a key platform for vector control. However, successful deployment of the approach is dependent on availability of competent human resource and infrastructural capacity.
